Description:
Decatur offers
a history rich in local and national influence. Few people know
that it was here in Decatur Illinois that the Abraham Lincoln legacy
actually began, where the leader who has become known as the “Great
Emancipator” first settled when coming to Illinois, made his
first political speech and was first nominated to become President.
Whether you’re
in the mood for the great outdoors, want to shop ‘til you
drop or prefer your entertainment on the big screen or stage, Decatur's
got something just for you. Today, we offer more than 2,000 acres
of parks and recreational areas and host more than 130 festivals
and other entertainment events including the Lakeside Music and
Arts Festival, the Decatur Celebration, Illinois’ largest
free family street festival and the event billed as the “Super
Bowl” of agricultural exhibitions — The Farm Progress
Show.
Downtown
Decatur is quickly becoming a destination in and of itself where
residents and visitors can bask in a buzz the likes of which cities
across the country only wish they had. Today the multimillion-dollar
renovation of the Lincoln Square Theater is nearing completion while
the revitalized Avon Theater and Avon Twins are an important part
of ongoing efforts to create a downtown hub of residential, entertainment
business and dining options for both residents and visitors alike.
Still, construction is well underway on a new 75,000 square foot
mixed use building downtown that will surely serve as a much-needed
anchor for the ongoing rebirth of our central business district.
